What is GPON?
Gigabit Passive Optical Network is an emerging fiber-optic technology used to deliver high-speed internet, voice, and video services directly to homes and businesses. Unlike traditional copper-based networks, GPON utilizes fiber-optic cables, which allows for faster data transmission, greater reliability, and enhanced efficiency. By using a passive network architecture, GPON connects multiple users to a single fiber line, significantly reducing infrastructure costs while maintaining exceptional performance.
How Does GPON Work?
GPON works by using fiber-optic splitters to divide a single optical signal into multiple signals, which are then distributed to several end-users. The network comprises an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) at the service provider's end and multiple Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) at customer premises. This architecture provides high-speed, symmetric (upload and download) internet connections, making it ideal for both residential and business applications.
